rehabilitacion vaults Royal granary

Project: Study of pathologies and restoration of the Royal granary vaults of Porcuna for regional headquarters of Local Archaeological Museum (Andalusia, Spain).
Location: Plaza de Andalucia, 1. Porcuna (Andalusia, Spain)
Date of project: April 2014 (under construction)
Architect: Pablo Manuel Millan Millan
Technical architect: Rafael Jerez Romera
Archaeologists: Rafael-A. Montilla, Pablo-J sack. Married Millán
Promoter: Ilustre Ayuntamiento de Porcuna (Jaén).

We work in an underground. A place devoid of natural light, high humidity and with certain air storage area without identity by the limitation of the vertical dimension. It is a residual space, a ventilation Chamber. The project will seek to eliminate that character of secondary space, giving it its own identity. To do this we will use two key resources:

Extension of the vertical dimension, digging the soil to a height that will give enough room so that it is not considered a residual space.
Search for light, by inserting a “carpet” white, neutral, illuminated that allows travel throughout the space, giving all the intervention unit.

At the same time the project arises as the intervention for the braking of the pathologies that currently affect the vaults located under the floor of the City Hall of Porcuna. These vaults that are part of the structure of the building was refurbished by the National Plan for devastated regions, represent an air Chamber and natural ventilation. Its state of abandonment and neglect are largely for having served so far as warehouse. This project provides first end pathologies that affect the structure of the same and then speak them in such a way that they can assume a new exhibition/Museum space as an enhancement for the City Council. Two types of pathologies are detected:

Physical patholo

gies: this type of failure in work refer to loss of material, bad behavior in the physical requirements and the deterioration due to misuse of the same. Thus the restoration object of this project have been detected: losses of mortars, use of cementitious based on a jointing mortars, assuming a serious pathology in the conservation of the sandstone.

Chemical pathology

: this type of pathologies are what make reference to those generated by exothermic chemical reactions (radiation, light-sensitive parasites, etc.) or endothermic (breaking the internal structure of building elements). In the restore object of this project has detected the presence of parasitic agents fungi, chemical reactions arising from poor quality stone or by reaction with elements of environmental pollution. Chemical decomposition caused by arenizaciones, black scab, peeling or filtered have caused the bad state of conservation above all in the areas located as wetlands.

The project is presented as a search for solutions to each one of the pathogens, both chemical and physical, through the incorporation of new elements physical and chemical treatment. The new architecture will allow public access to this space, as well as the allocation to it of all the elements necessary to be a museum or exhibition space.
